University offers beer brewing class

Posted on 13 November 2008 by Chris

The University of Wisconsin will offer a class in home brewing next semester and not surprisingly, students are scrambling to sign up. I wish there had a home brewing class when I was in college.

Of course Wisconsin has a long history of brewing beer, especially Milwaukee. This may or may not have anything to do with the University of Wisconsin being ranked the #1 party school in the US.

… interest in the course springs from the region’s long history of making beer. The course, in the university’s bacteriology department, will focus on fermentation rather than consumption.

MillerCoors donated $100,000 in equipment that can make 10 gallons—roughly two cases—of beer at a time.

There is concern about what will happen to the home school brew projects since university’s typically don’t allow alcohol on campus and they certainly couldn’t sell it.

“The students will sample it and critique it,” [instructor Jon] Roll said. “But beyond that we’ll probably dump any excess. We have absolutely no plans to distribute or sell it.”

Dump it? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Incidentally, the class will be offered at the Madison campus, not the Stout campus.

$100,000 is an Expensive Home brew Kit wish I could play with that thats more like High end Pilot brewery .

When I studied food technology we re purposed the steam Jacketed boiler to make beer from a Mash-Extract recipe that I created .

I can brew beer with about $25 worth of Equipment at home if I have to but I would like to spend about $1000 on Mashing Fermenting and Kegging Gear when the Budget allows.

After visiting breweries and getting to know the beer industry, I sure would have majored in beer brewing and beer studies in college. It is such a fun business, oh and there is beer too:)

How cool is that? I would love to taste my midterm test. I would definitely get an A in that class. I bet there would be one heck of a party at the end of the semester.

If this was offered when I was in college, I would have went to class a lot more. How times have changed. I could have graduated at the top of my class.
