    Beer styles on your iPhone

Posted on 05 November 2008 by Chris

If you have an iPhone you may be interested in the Beer Judge Certification Program Style Guidelines for the iPhone.

Finally, a useful beer-related application for the iPhone. BJCP Styles is an application that brings the full Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) Style Guidelines to the iPhone. The contents are fully searchable. You can search for a style, a particular flavor trait, or country of origin for example. The iPhone spelling auto-correction wanted to change my search for “IPA” to “UPS” but otherwise the application is straightforward and easy to use. Developer Joshua Baran has the support of the BJCP in developing this reference tool, so the application shouldn’t disappear…

The BJCP Style Guidelines are the definitive guide to beer styles so this would be a very handy app to have in your pocket.

    Another beer pouring robot

Posted on 01 November 2008 by Chris

Here’s another beer-pouring bot but this one is a little more sophisticated than the one that is triggered by a Pownce post. It even asks for a tip after the pour!

I don’t know much about this robot except that the video was shot at an open house for Total Manufacturing Company, which is a metal products manufacturer in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Remote control beer cooler and beer buggy

Posted on 26 October 2008 by Chris

More beer gear of questionable usefulness but undeniable coolness: remote control beer cooler and beer buggy.

This amusing remote-controlled cooler can travel across a patio, rug, or kitchen floor to deliver a well-timed beverage [beer] to parched party guests. With room for 12 cans or bottles and ice, the cooler rolls on four sturdy underside wheels up to 40 feet from the host at the controls. The remote features simple controls that send the cooler forward, backward, and progressively left or right. With sides of water-resistant insulated vinyl and a secure zippered lid, beverages stay cold for hours. The cooler can be carried with the removable shoulder strap and collapses to just 6 1/2″ tall for storage.

This 1:12 scale remote-controlled dune buggy has cup holders that secure two 12 oz. cans or bottles of your favorite beverage [beer], allowing you to dispatch the buggy to the refrigerator or cooler for more libation (willing accomplice not included). The buggy is easy to maneuver using the included two-channel 49MHz radio transmitter, which controls right, left, forward, and reverse movement.

Both are available at Hammacher Schlemmer. The cooler is $70 and the buggy is $50. I think I’ll put both on my Christmas list.

Lego bot pours beer on Pownce command

Posted on 25 October 2008 by Chris

This beer pouring Lego bot responds to a Pownce post. While not very practical, it is very cool! The video is more watchable if you mute it.

The night before Barcamp Nashville ‘08 I tested the Inebriator for the fam. A little too much head (no jokes please) so I tuned it a little afterwards. Regardless, it WORKED! Basic idea Lego bot looks for new RSS updates from Pownce. When it sees a new update it reads it for the word “Pour”. If it finds it it triggers the bot to pour. The Pownce feed can then be updated from the iPhone Pownce app.
